Pop heart-throb Ricky Martin is to headline a UK concert to help children's charities next month, it was announced today.
The international star, who is based in the US, will jet in for annual spectacular the Greatest Love Gala at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
Also performing at the show on May 11 will be singer Gabrielle - who recently topped the singles chart with Rise - and Dame Diana Rigg. Martin shot to fame in the UK in 1999 after his huge number one hit Livin' La Vida Loca, one of a string of Latin-flavoured pop hits hogging the charts in the summer.
At the time he brought central London to a halt when he made a personal appearance at a record shop with crowds jamming Oxford Street. The Greatest Love charity promotes unity and cooperation between children's charities around the world. The NSPCC and the Chicken Shed Theatre - one of Diana, Princess of Wales's favourite charities - will be among organisations to benefit from proceeds of the gala.
Tickets for a Cancer Charity event have gone on sale today at London's Royal Albert Hall on May 11th, 2000. Ricky has been scheduled to perform as headliner of the show. The venue, however, is pointing out that at the moment they do not have final confirmation on a performance by Ricky Martin yet. Please ring T: +44 (0)171 586 8212 for more information and to buy tickets. Ticket prices are from £25 to £250.
The Recording Academy has begun to finalize details for the first-ever Latin Grammy Awards, which will be held this September in Los Angeles. The ceremony will be held at the Staples Center Wednesday, Sept. 13, and the two-hour event will be broadcast on CBS. The 42nd Annual Grammy Awards were held at the same venue in February.
"The inaugural Latin Grammy Awards will be a worldwide celebration, which deserves a world-class venue," Michael Greene, president and CEO of the Recording Academy, said in a statement. "[The] Staples Center is the obvious choice. Everyone there has demonstrated to the Academy that they are dedicated to making the first Latin Grammy Awards a truly spectacular experience and a memorable event for our nominees, members, and the audience. This commitment to the Latin show from the proven Staples Center team will ensure a high-profile production that will resonate with the public."
Forty awards will be handed out during the ceremony. Last February, 98 Grammy awards were handed out, with a record-tying eight awards going to Latin artist Carlos Santana and his comeback album Supernatural.
