Due to horrific events today in the USA, the Latin Grammys have been canceled.

Our thoughts go out to ALL who have been affected. RMTEE

Official Press Release:

Tuesday September 11 1:53 PM ET Latin Grammy Awards in Los Angeles Canceled

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The second annual Latin Grammy Awards -- moved for security reasons from Miami to Los Angeles -- were canceled, with organizers saying that the show could not go on as planned on Tuesday night because of the apparent terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C..

The cancellation, announced by Michael Greene, head of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, came as buildings around the Los Angeles area were being closed or evacuated as a precaution.

A spokesman for the academy, Bernard Alonso, said Greene decided to call off the awards show ``in light of the events that have been transpiring, referring to the airliners that crashed early Tuesday into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in Manhattan and into the Pentagon (news - web sites).

The Latin Grammys (news - web sites) show had been dogged by its own political controversy for weeks after organizers triggered a firestorm by abruptly yanking the awards ceremony out of Miami last month amid fears that anti-Castro demonstrations protesting the presence of Cuban artists might get out of hand.

As an apparent security precaution against anti-Castro protesters, the shows organizers had planned to have no red carpet receptions for the stars.

Scheduled performers at the event, expected to draw thousands to the Forum, included guitarist Carlos Santana and Jose Angel Hevia, a Galician flutist and bagpiper, with a star-studded lineup of presenters including film actor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Latin jazz musician Arturo Sandoval.

Stars like Marc Anthony and heartthrob Ricky Martin, who helped spark the huge crossover explosion for Latin music, were also featured among the nominees and presenters at last years awards, which were seen by 7.5 million U.S. viewers.

Many people involved in the show, including nominees, were relieved on Tuesday upon hearing that the show, a $4 million production to be broadcast on Tuesday in the United States and 120 other countries, had been canceled.

``We cant think about music right now. The only feeling we can have now is about the families involved by this tragedy and our security, said Andres Recio, personal manager for 28-year-old Colombian rocker Juanes who swept the nominations, receiving seven for his brand of rock and Colombian vallenato.

It was not immediately clear if the show would be resurrected at a later date.

Im sure theyre going to reschedule. Its not going away but theyre being sensitive to the national tragedy. Who wants to be in a public place with thousands of people under these circumstances? said one Latin recording executive.
